7 Tips to Make Mornings With Chronic Pain Easier

For many people living with chronic pain, mornings can be one of the most challenging times of the day. While most people experience a bit of pain or stiffness in the morning, they are often still able to perform their morning routines and tasks, or are able to fade the stiffness away by taking a warm shower. However, the morning aches and stiffness for a person with chronic pain can be far more debilitating. In fact, it may take several hours of stretching and waiting for pain medications to work before it's even possible to get out of bed.

Living with chronic pain can be incredibly difficult, both physically and emotionally. Waking up to intense pain and stiffness can be overwhelming, especially if you have tasks to accomplish or work/school to attend. Below are some helpful tips to make your mornings a bit more manageable. If chronic pain makes mornings difficult for you, know that you are not alone.

1. Prepare For The Morning The Night Before

Sometimes people tend to feel better at night than in the morning. If that's you, try to prepare for the morning during that time. Lay your clothes out ahead of time, pack your lunch at night, etc. Set your alarm for an hour before, that way you can take your medicine before you have to get up - that way it begins to work while you rest.

2. Start Early and Take Your Time

Try to wake up earlier in the morning so that you have time to ease into the day. Start your day slow, and consider sitting with a warm blanket or heating pad to help lessen the stiffness and pain.

3. Do Some Light Stretching

There are actually some gentle yoga stretches that you can do in bed. Yoga helps the stiffness and pain by getting your blood moving and warming up your muscles. If you see a physical therapist, they may recommend some physical therapy that you can do in bed to increase circulation to the joints and muscles.

4. Think Positive

The mind reacts to physical stimuli, and although it may be hard to do so with chronic pain, try to force yourself to smile in the morning. Say some positive affirmations that will help you calm down or focus.

5. Establish a Routine

Have routines in place that you can follow automatically. Heat, home exercises, ice, etc., can all help you out when you can't move. Take medications as prescribed, prepare meals the night before, use gentle exercises to help warm up your body.

6. Ask for Help

If someone wants to help you, let them. Tell them. Ask them. There is no shame in asking for help or needing help. Help yourself by letting them help you.

7. Use Mountain Ice

Adding Mountain Ice into your morning routine can make it easier on your body to move.
